Introduction:
The Gainsborough Memorial Fund exists to commemorate the extraordinary contribution of our town’s people during the First and Second World Wars. Through the pioneering industries of Marshall’s of Gainsborough and Rose Brothers, thousands of local men and women dedicated their skill, labour, and courage to the nation’s war effort.

Our Story:
In 1848, William Marshall founded Marshalls of Gainsborough, renowned for its agricultural machinery. Just across town, in 1881, William Rose established Rose Brothers, a name that became synonymous with innovation in the packaging industry. Both companies grew into pillars of our community.

When war broke out, these businesses turned their expertise to manufacturing military machinery, weapons, vehicles, and vital equipment for the Admiralty, War Office, and Air Ministry. At the height of both conflicts, almost the entire working population of Gainsborough—over 7,000 people—was employed by Marshall’s and Rose Brothers, making an immense contribution to Britain’s strength and resilience.

Why a Memorial?
While these efforts shaped history and safeguarded freedom, they came at great cost and sacrifice. The Gainsborough Memorial will stand as a lasting tribute to those who worked tirelessly on the home front, ensuring their service and dedication are remembered with pride and gratitude.
